Love is the Christian's triumph over the devil, hatred, and envy. In order to reach the divine harbour of God's love, we must first fear Him as God, Who chastens sin and transgression. It is not possible to cross the sea and reach the harbour without a boat. Likewise, it is impossible to reach the harbour of love without repentance. The fear of God appoints us com­mander and captain in the boat of repentance, and it takes us across the murky sea of life and guides us to the divine harbour of divine love. Just as we are unable to live without air likewise it is impossible to live in the eternal life with God if we do not breathe the very sweet and fragrant air of God's love.

Let us shake off the burden of our sins with the power of repentance, and thenceforth light and free as eagles, let us fly high above where the eternal God has stored up the inex­haustible treasures of virtue and wisdom, so that we may drink the waters of eternal life and be deified, as the Scrip­tures say: "You are gods, and all of you are the sons of the Most High."

Blessed be this hour which our good Lord grants us. In peace and calm we can speak about various aspects of our long journey.

          How wondrous is this way! It is beyond our mind. Our spirit is unable to follow the "example" of Christ[1], our God, Who brought down to earth the fire of the Father's love[2].

          Today I will refer to the subject of repentance and filial adoption. Despite the fact that these states in their perfect form are beyond every human description, we, in our foolishness, will speak in the measure of our capacities about these things, which are infinitely and inexplicably great and sublime.

          How many times have we repeated that we begin our journey from the small step of repentance... The end however of this way, according to our understanding, is the deification of man. When we dare speak about these matters, many faint-hearted persons become troubled and annoyed. O, if only they knew with what fear is filled our soul, lest we be mistaken in any of our words, when we refer to the most Holy of all and everything, Father's love!

          How can we however approach this subject? Leaving behind for the time-being some details, we will speak about the most essential.

C'est un mystère indicible, qui me dépasse. Et, toutefois, c'est un fait que le Fils de Dieu est venu dans le temps en assumant volontiers le besoin de moi, en manifestant un besoin de moi. Il veut que je L'aime. Ce que Dieu nous donne ne serait pas parfait, s'il n'y avait que Lui qui nous aimait, s'Il n'avait pas besoin par bienveillance de notre amour. Là est l'abnégation de Dieu: Il a accepté d'avoir besoin de nous. C'est en cela que se manifeste la valeur indicible et éternelle qu'Il a mise en nous.

L'homme est créé par Dieu avec le sceau de la responsabilité imprimé en lui. Ici est une preuve de l'existence de Dieu. Je suis responsable, je dois répondre à une autorité inconditionnée. Je dois répondre à l'appel de Dieu, pour tout ce que j'ai, pour tout ce qui existe autour de moi, pour moi-même; je dois retourner à-Dieu tout ce qu'Il m'a donné, je dois Lui retourner moi-même. Je parle parce que je dois répondre; ma parole est une parole de réponse.

Our holy father Arsenius was born in 1350 to pious and humble Serbian parents in the town of Tver, about 150 miles northwest of Moscow, Russia. (His grandparents had migrated to this territory in Russia some seventy-five years before his birth.)

He was a very serious and intelligent boy, excelling in school while also delighting in serving the Lord as an acolyte in his local Orthodox Church. When Arsenius was still a young boy, both his parents became grievously ill; and just prior to his thirteenth birthday, they both fell asleep in the Lord. On their deathbed they asked Arsenius to fulfill one last wish: to live a holy and devout life, remembering the Lord God all his days, and to remember the poor and needy. At this time, because Arsenius was their only child, they willed all their possessions to him.

After the repose of his pious and God-loving parents, Arsenius spent many hours in prayer, seeking guidance from the Lord as to how to carry out his parents’ last request. During this time, two particular passages of the New Testament continually spoke to his heart: “For what is a mall profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matt. 16:26).

A selected passage from the commentary of Saint John Chrysostom on the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God”.

 Saint Paul seems to me to have mooted this whole topic with a view to those who were in danger; or, rather, not this only, but also what was said a little before this. For the words, the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us; and those, that the whole creation groaned; and the saying, that we are saved by hope; and the phrase, we with patience wait for; and that, we know not what we should pray for as we ought; are all of them said to these. For he instructs them not to choose just what they may think, themselves, to be useful, but what the Spirit may suggest ; for many things that seem to one's self profitable, do sometimes even cause much harm. Quiet, for instance, and freedom from dangers, and living out of fear, seemed to be advantageous for them.

1. Si l'on veut préparer un parfum exquis, la Loi prescrit de mélanger à parties égales l'encens diaphane, la cannelle, l'onyx et la myrrhe : c'est le quaternaire des vertus. Si elles sont en pleine mesure et bien en équilibre, l'esprit est à l'épreuve de toute défaillance.

Parole adressée à la communauté de la famille de la Sainte Trinité, à l’occasion du Samedi de l’Acathiste à la Mère de Dieu.  

      Nous sommes incapables de parler du Seigneur Dieu, sans parler de la Vierge Marie. Tout œuvre dans l’Église du Christ est accompli avec la présence de la Vierge. Du moment où la Vierge a accepté que le Fils de Dieu demeure en elle, et prendre corps dans son sein, elle est devenue liée à Lui existentiellement, et elle sera toujours présente avec Lui. Par son amour maternel, elle a embrassé Le Dieu incarné, et par cet amour même, elle embrasse l’univers tout entier.

L’éloge est présenté à Dieu exclusivement, aucun humain ne le déserve. La Vierge Marie est toujours liée à son Fils, ce qui apparaît clairement dans les icônes où elle se trouve toujours représentée avec l’enfant Jésus, dès lors la Vierge Marie et le mystère de l’incarnation se trouvent inséparables, et ce mystère est le sujet principal de L’hymne Acathiste :

“ Un ange, parmi ceux qui se tiennent devant la Gloire du Seigneur, fut envoyé dire à la Mère de Dieu : " Réjouis-toi ”…

Praying the Jesus Prayer showed me Christ.

In the midst of a painful health crisis, a simple prayer revealed God’s presence not only in the midst of the writer’s own suffering, but also in the suffering of others.

I am no stranger to physical pain. For years, I have suffered from migraines, endometriosis and hip issues; my epidural failed during labor; and in college, I was hospitalized for two and a half weeks for a complicated case of appendicitis. But the suffering I experienced during my most recent health scare -- portal vein thrombosis, a series of three clots blocking my liver’s main blood vessel -- was different.

    Excruciating and intense, the pain and all that came with it left me disoriented and then reoriented. It moved me to lament and to trust. It brought me suffering, but also mercy.
