        When the conversations turned to religion, as they soon did. I heard of an extraordinary happening. a miracle, which had just occurred in Vorkuta. God indeed was there with us! And the eagerness with which the men told me this story left no doubt as to the fact that the Iron Curtain could not keep God out of a country or out of the minds and hearts of its people. 

  

         It was in November of that year, 1950, just after our own arrival, that three nuns reached the camp under sentences of hard labor. The many thousand women prisoners at Vorkuta did not work in the mines but performed other rugged work, and the nuns were assigned to a plant which made bricks for construction work throughout the whole Arctic area of Russia. 

...servants of God and not of Satan...

        When the nuns were first taken to the brick factory, they told the foreman that they regarded doing any work for the Communist regime as working for the Devil and, since they were the servants of God and not of Satan, they did not propose to bow to the orders of their foreman despite any threats he might make.                                                                                            Stripped of their religious garb, the nuns' faith was their armor. They were ready to face anything and everything to keep their vow and they did face their punishment, a living testimony of great courage. They were put on punishment rations, consisting of black bread and rancid soup, day after day. But each morning when they were ordered to go out to the brick factory, into the day pits, or to any other back-breaking assignment, they refused. This refusal meant, of course, that they were destined to go through worse ordeals. Angered by their obstinacy and fearing the effect upon the other slave laborers, the commandant ordered that they be placed in strait-jackets. Their hands were tied in back of them and then the rope with which their wrists were bound was passed down around their ankles and drawn up tight. In this manner, their feet were pulled up behind them and their shoulders wrenched backward and downward into a position of excruciating pain.

L'église du
monastère “Bisericani”.

 Le monastère Orthodoxe “Bisericani” est situé dans le village “Scaricica”, dans la région de “Néamt”. Selon la tradition, Saint Étienne le grand et puis son fils Stefanita Voda ont édifié l’église du monastère au XV siècle, pour le bénéfice des ascètes qui vivaient à l’endroit.

        Saint Joseph dit “de la Bisericani”, vivait au XV siècle, dans une grotte près du monastère actuel. Des moines le rejoignirent. Au milieu de sa grotte, le prêtre Joseph éleva une église en bois, puis organisa des séances de prière  perpétuelle, en divisant les moines en trois groupes de trois heures chacun, selon le modèle typique du monastère Studion à Constantinople.

        À la fin du XV siècle, les Tatars brûlèrent l’église. Les moines décidèrent de s’enfuir au Mont-Athos en Grèce.

Saint Arsenios.

Our holy father Arsenius was born in 1350 to pious and humble Serbian parents in the town of Tver, about 150 miles northwest of Moscow, Russia. (His grandparents had migrated to this territory in Russia some seventy-five years before his birth.)

He was a very serious and intelligent boy, excelling in school while also delighting in serving the Lord as an acolyte in his local Orthodox Church. When Arsenius was still a young boy, both his parents became grievously ill; and just prior to his thirteenth birthday, they both fell asleep in the Lord. On their deathbed they asked Arsenius to fulfill one last wish: to live a holy and devout life, remembering the Lord God all his days, and to remember the poor and needy. At this time, because Arsenius was their only child, they willed all their possessions to him.

After the repose of his pious and God-loving parents, Arsenius spent many hours in prayer, seeking guidance from the Lord as to how to carry out his parents’ last request. During this time, two particular passages of the New Testament continually spoke to his heart: “For what is a mall profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matt. 16:26).

Mgr. Basile (Krivochéine), archevêque de Bruxelles et de Belgique, est l’un des prélats les plus marquants dans l’histoire de l’Eglise Orthodoxe Russe de la deuxième moitié du XX siècle. Ayant prononcé ses vœux – sous le nom de Basile – au monastère russe de Saint-Panteleimon, il y demeurera vingt-deux ans, dans l’ascèse, la prière et le travail, notamment administratif (en tant que secrétaire du monastère). Après la Seconde guerre mondiale, le contexte de la guerre civile grecque forcera cependant des moines russes – dont Basile Krivochéine – à quitter le Mont Athos. Invité à participer au Patristic Greek Lexicon édité à Oxford par le professeur Lampe, l’ancien athonite s’installera dans cette ville, où il sera ordonné prêtre. Basile Krivochéine est appelé à l’épiscopat dans l’Église russe. Sacré à Londres le 14 juin 1959, il sera d’abord évêque auxiliaire à Paris, puis archevêque diocésain à Bruxelles à partir de 1960.L’archevêque Basile contribuera au développement de l’Église orthodoxe en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas. Le 22 septembre 1985, l’archevêque Basile Krivochéine sera rappelé à Dieu durant un voyage en Russie, et inhumé dans sa ville natale. Traduites en différentes langues, plusieurs fois rééditées, ses œuvres constituent, jusqu’à nos jours, une référence dans le domaine des études patristiques notamment.

Saint Syméon le nouveau Théologien, au commencement de sa conversion à Dieu « récitait avec instance des prières à la Mère de Dieu, avec gémissements et larmes». Et son grand zèle dans les prières « attira la compassion de la Mère du Christ et par son intercession se rendit la Divinité propice, et fit descendre jusqu'à lui la grâce de l'Esprit. Et celle-ci (à son tour) lui donna la force d'atteindre jusqu'au Ciel et le fit digne de voir la lumière que tous désirent et que bien peu obtiennent. »

Saint Syméon raconte que, tourmenté par le chagrin de ne plus voir le Christ et du désir de Le voir encore une fois,

“un jour que j'étais allé saluer l'image immaculée de celle qui T'a enfanté et que je me prosternai devant elle, Toi-même, avant que je me fusse relevé, au-dedans de mon cœur misérable, comme si Tu l'avais transformé en lumière, Tu Te fis voir; et alors je connus que je Te possédai consciemment en moi. »

The Blessed Surgeon’s faith and love. Excerpts from the life of Saint Luke of Simferopol.

The faith.

When he arrived in Simferopol in 1946, Saint Luke had thought that his knowledge and experience in surgery would be in demand. However, a month-and-a-half passed before he received official per­mission to practice medicine. From 1946 on, he worked as a consultant at the Simferopol Hospital. He also assisted the Hospital for Invalids of the Great Patriotic War. Until the end of 1947, he gave reports and lectures to doctors and operated on patients and the wounded. Zhdanov (the official in charge of Russian Orthodox Church Affairs) characterized his medical activity as very active.

Archbishop Luke regularly attended meetings of the surgeons' associa­tion, in which civil doctors and surgeons participated. He would listen carefully to their reports and speeches and always introduced necessary corrections. According to Dr. G. F. Pyatidvernaya, during a meeting, one surgeon asked the archbishop: "How can you, such a specialist, a surgeon, believe in somebody whom you have never seen, in God?"

Archimandrite George, the former Abbot of St. Gregorios Monastery (1974-2014), was well known throughout the Orthodox world both as a theologian and spiritual father. He has written many books and articles on theology and the spiritual life. His works have been translated into many languages. He reposed in the Lord, the day of Pentecost, 8 June 2014. 

The Church is the place of our meeting with the Holy Trinity and the Epiphany where the fullness of Grace and the real gifts of the Spirit exist. Where everything is perfect, since "the divine Fathers put everything in its proper order". They were driven and guided by the authenticity of the omniscience of God and "having recollected all the science of the soul" have passed on to us authentically" the great mystery of piety". The real piety, not the fake, not the in­dividual piety according to everyone's personal opinion, but piety of the Church.

We, the Orthodox Christians, in our honorable struggle daily die according to the old man and go from admiration to admiration and from surprise to surprise. We act as such even when we take up our cross, each one personally his own, despite our human passions and weaknesses.

En ce jour, la Sainte Église célèbre la mémoire des saints-Pères, qui se sont réunis au premier concile œcuménique, à la ville de Nice près de la ville de Constantinople. Le saint empereur Constantin faisait appel à ce concile nommé “le grand”, après avoir concerté avec certains évêques proches de lui, en ce qui concerne un enseignement étrange, que l’Église appelle “hérésie”. Ils se sont délibéré pour mettre fin au trouble causé par l’hérésie attribuée à un archimandrite Égyptien, nommé “Arius”.    

L’empereur  Constantin a pris l’initiative de convoquer les évêques de l’univers, c'est-à-dire le monde Byzantin, dans le temps. Il a voulu s’informer d’eux de l’enseignement officiel de l’Église Sainte Catholique Apostolique.

La vie monastique n'est pas toujours vécue entre les murs d'un monastère et le don de startchestvo (la guidance spirituelle), étant un charisme de l'esprit qui ne dépend pas d'une ordination, il peut se manifester chez une femme comme chez un homme.

 Dans une maison comme les autres d'une petite ville de Sibérie, vit la moniale Deborah. Percluse de maladies - tachycardie, migraines, maladie des poumons, des reins -, elle a déjà été miraculée une fois. Alors qu'on l'emmenait pour se faire opérer d'un kyste du cerveau et qu'elle souffrait horriblement, elle a senti qu'il se produisait quelque chose: elle a eu encore plus mal, puis la douleur est passée. A l'hôpital, les examens médicaux prouvèrent qu'il n'y avait plus de kyste, mais comme une cicatrice fraîche.

Elle se rappelle le long chemin qui l'a menée au monachisme. Voilà son récit: «Les fondements de l'orthodoxie ont été posés pour toujours dans mon âme enfantine. Mes parents étaient orthodoxes. Ma mère était sans instruction, mon père avait étudié au séminaire. On ne s'asseyait jamais à table sans avoir prié.

Father Maximos spent most of the morning in his office chatting with two fellows in their mid-twenties. They had arrived at the monastery two weeks earlier and were staying in a cell reserved for visitors. I assumed at the time that they were potential novices exploring the option of a monastic life. But Stephanos, being a kind of lay father figure to the younger monks and therefore having intimate knowledge of the goings-on in the monastery, informed me confidentially that the newcomers had a very severe drug problem. They had arrived with the aim of freeing them­selves from their deadly addiction, and were not primarily concerned with the salvation of their souls. Father Maximos was their therapist and the monastery was serving as a detoxification center of a sort.

Sermon of the Holy Fathers’ Sunday.

           In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We are now in the period of the feast of Nativity, and according to the liturgical calendar, the celebration started on Friday, and will be completed tomorrow, God’s willing.

Therefore today, which is the Sunday before Christ’s Nativity, is included in the period of the Nativity feast, where the holy fathers of the Lord Jesus in the flesh are mentioned.

Today, I would like to reflect upon the subject of the Holy Theotokos.

What is the one thing that the Most Holy Theotokos offered, that no one had ever offered before?... And nevertheless everyone is called to offer?.

Après l’invasion des Perses pour Jérusalem, une grande multitude de gens se réfugiaient à Alexandrie. Un de ces réfugiés, voyant quelle était l’extrême compassion du saint patriarche Jean, pour les pauvres, résolut de le tenter et un jour qu’il allait à l’hôpital visiter les malades ainsi qu’il faisait toujours deux ou trois fois la semaine, il l’aborda avec un méchant habit et lui dit qu’il le priait d’avoir pitié de lui qui était un pauvre réfugié. Sur quoi, le saint commanda à son aumônier de lui donner six pièces d’argent. Les ayant reçues, il alla changer d’habit et vint par un autre côté à la rencontre du bienheureux patriarche et se jetant à ses pieds lui dit : Je suis dans le plus grand besoin, ayez pitié de moi, je vous en supplie. Alors, il commanda à son aumônier de lui donner six pièces d’or. Quand il fut un peu éloigné, cet aumônier dit à l’oreille du saint : Je suis sûr, Monseigneur, que celui-ci a reçu deux fois l’aumône. Mais il fit semblant de ne pas l’entendre et cet homme étant revenu pour la troisième fois demander encore, l’aumônier tira doucement le saint patriarche pour lui faire remarquer que c’était le même et alors, cet ami de Dieu qui était véritablement miséricordieux et charitable lui dit : Donnez-lui douze pièces d’or, car c’est peut-être Jésus Christ, mon Sauveur, qui vient à dessein de me tenter.

“Chante et ne cesse jamais de chanter”...Saint Jean Coucouzèle et l'icône Notre Dame Coucouzelissa.

    Notre Père Jean Coucouzèle naquit à Dyrachion (ou Justiniana Prima) en Illyrie sous la dynastie des Comnènes (12e s, ou, selon certains, seulement à la fin du 15e s). Orphelin de père, il fut confié par sa mère aux meilleurs maîtres et reçut une éducation soignée. II fut bientôt remarqué pour sa voix angélique et devint le meilleur des chantres de la cour et le favori de l'empereur. Ce dernier désirait marier Jean avantageusement, mais, secrètement, le jeune homme n'aspirait qu'à quitter le monde et à embrasser la vie des moines. Une visite de l'higoumène de la Grande-Lavra fut l'occasion que Dieu lui offrit. Il se présenta à l'higoumène sans dévoiler son identité et, après une épreuve de quelques jours, celui-ci le revêtit de l'habit angélique et l'emmena avec lui sur la Sainte Montagne.

When I read the book of Elder Silouan...Elder Iliy on St. Silouan the Athonite .

Schema-Archimandrite Iliy (Nozdrin), spiritual father of His Holiness, Patriarch Kirill, ascetically struggled on Mt. Athos for more than ten years in one of the sketes of St. Panteleimon Monastery—the Old Russikon. Namely there, at the mill just a few decades earlier Venerable Silouan the Athonite carried out his obedience. In 1967 the book of his life and teachings became a spiritual guide for the now-revered elder, then novice Alexei of the Pskov Caves Monastery.     

   When I read the book of Elder Silouan it opened up a bright expanse for me where I found what I needed—answers to my various questions. Generally speaking, the book gave a clear and concise presentation of the content of our faith.

    Elder Silouan is a modern ascetic. In him there was no hypocrisy, no delusion. He wrote and spoke by the grace of God. That which the Lord revealed to him by the Holy Spirit he heard and repeated. He was a man without higher education, although he did have some schooling of course. His book became acclaimed. He didn’t write it himself, but rather wrote it from his words. It was translated into I don’t know how many languages, but more than ten for sure. Believers who turn to this book seeking truth— the Truth, find it. I can’t speak about this book with high enough praise and gratefulness to Elder Silouan.

Most honorable among nuns, dearest sister Maximilla Ivanovna,

    Be strong in the Lord!

    I was glad to receive your welcome letter in good order. I thank you most kindly for everything. Do keep writing to me, and do not make this difficult for yourself. Write to me simply, whatever you feel, and just write as you speak. You do not need to go into detail about your devotion and love for me, because I have known that for a long time.

Write to me mostly about yourself and the kind of spiritual infirmities and trials you have, so that for my part I will be able to show you sympathy for the sake of your spiritual welfare, instead of mere useless affection.

    Of course you and I, who are feeble, have no need to con­verse about great feats of asceticism and exalted virtues­ just about weaknesses and the trials of life. I was pleased with this last letter of yours-that is what they should always be like. You write to me straightforwardly and trustingly concerning your infirmity.
