Sermon of the Holy Fathers’ Sunday.

           In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We are now in the period of the feast of Nativity, and according to the liturgical calendar, the celebration started on Friday, and will be completed tomorrow, God’s willing.

Therefore today, which is the Sunday before Christ’s Nativity, is included in the period of the Nativity feast, where the holy fathers of the Lord Jesus in the flesh are mentioned.

Today, I would like to reflect upon the subject of the Holy Theotokos.

What is the one thing that the Most Holy Theotokos offered, that no one had ever offered before?... And nevertheless everyone is called to offer?.

Saint John Chrysostom’s Christmas Homily

         

         BEHOLD a new and wondrous mystery. My ears resound to the Shepherd’s song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. The Angels sing. The Archangels blend their voice in harmony. The Cherubim hymn their joyful praise. The Seraphim exalt His glory. All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He Who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below; and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised.

         Bethlehem this day resembles heaven; hearing from the stars the singing of angelic voices; and in place of the sun, enfolds within itself, on every side, the Sun of justice. And ask not how: for where God wills, the order of nature yields. For He willed; He had the power; He descended; He redeemed; all things yielded in obedience to God. This day He Who is, is Born; and He Who is, becomes what He was not. For when He was God, He became man; yet not departing from the Godhead that is His. Nor yet by any loss of divinity became He man, nor through increase became He God from man; but being the Word He became flesh, His nature, because of impassibility, remaining unchanged.

   À l'époque de l'implacable persécution lancée par l'empereur Dioclétien (vers 305), la terreur régnait et le sang coulait à flots, jusque dans les régions les plus extrêmes de l'Empire. Où qu'ils se trouvent et quelle que soit leur condition les chrétiens devaient alors choisir entre l'apostasie ou le martyre. Dans la ville de Satala, en Arménie, vivait alors un brillant aristocrate, Eustrate, conseiller de rang ducal et chef des notaires impériaux de la cité, qui avait pu jusque-là garder secrète son appartenance à l'Église. Devant les glorieux combats des confesseurs de la foi, il fut saisi lui aussi du désir d'obtenir la couronne inflétrissable des martyrs, mais il craignait encore la perspective des supplices: Peut-être n'aurait-il pas le courage de les endurer et reculerait-il? Pour savoir si la volonté de Dieu était bien qu'il s'avançât au combat, il confia sa ceinture, signe de sa dignité, à l'un de ses serviteurs, en lui recommandant d'aller la poser sur l'autel de l'église et de lui dire si la première personne qui allait entrer dans le sanctuaire pour la prendre serait bien le vénérable prêtre Auxence.

Q.: God did not become visible to men and therefore no one knows how He appears, nor can they paint His form in an icon or fashion a true likeness of His Countenance. He Himself has said, "Thou canst not see My face, for there shall no man see Me and live." The Evangelist John says the same: "No man hath seen God at any time." Likewise, the Apostle Paul says: " ... who only hath immortality, dwell­ing in the light which no man can approach unto, whom no man hath seen nor can see, to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen."

   Comment faudra t-il expliquer à nos petits enfants, la fausseté  des apparences et des décorations qui accompagnent la fête de la Nativité de notre Sauveur Jésus Christ,  en particulier  le sapin et les cadeaux offerts par le Père Noël, sachant que ces ornements  envahissent les routes, les magasins, les maisons, et les écoles… de telle façon que les enfants ne les rencontrent pas seulement dans leurs maisons.     Je remercie Dieu pour toi, pour avoir posé cette question courageuse avec cette simplicité…

    La majorité des gens dans nos pays, se hâtent pour participer à toutes les festivités externes et traditionnelles des fêtes et des célébrations religieuses ou mondaines. Ils pratiquent ce qui est connu dans leurs pays, et ils apprennent ce qui n’appartient pas à leurs coutumes, à travers les panneaux publicitaires, la télévision…etc.

    Toutes ces apparences superficielles : les habits de fêtes pour les grands et les petits,  l’acte d’offrir les cadeaux dans les paniers qui descendent du ciel, et les emballages en forme de choux, qui accompagnent les nouveau-nées…etc., tout  nous emprisonne toujours dans la banalité de la vie…
